Why Isn't My Option Moving? Low Delta, Explained
You're watching SPY tick up nicely and your option is just... sitting there. The culprit is almost always delta — and it's a lesson worth learning early.
NoVo Options Trading · 2026
If SPY is moving but your option barely budges, the usual reason is low delta — you're holding a strike that responds only weakly to the underlying. Understanding this is key to picking options that actually move when you're right.
What delta is doing
Delta is how much your option moves per $1 in SPY. A 0.50-delta option gains ~$0.50 per $1 SPY move; a 0.10-delta option gains only ~$0.10 — so a solid SPY move produces a tiny option move. If your option feels “stuck” while SPY runs, you're almost certainly holding a low-delta, far-out-of-the-money strike that just doesn't respond much to normal moves.
Why far-OTM options feel dead
A far-OTM option is mostly a bet on a big move; for small-to-normal moves, its delta is low, so it hardly reacts — and meanwhile theta is quietly draining it. It can feel like the option is broken. It isn't — it's behaving exactly as its low delta says it should. This is the flip side of the far-OTM trap: cheap, but unresponsive.
Your option isn't broken — it's low-delta. A far-out strike is built to ignore small moves; if you want it to move with SPY, you need it closer to the money.
The quick takeaway
A “stuck” option is a low-delta option — too far OTM to respond to normal SPY moves. The fix: trade higher-delta, near-the-money strikes that track SPY. For a scalp you want responsiveness, so this matters a lot. NoVo favors responsive strikes automatically, so your option moves when SPY moves.
