An option is a wasting asset. Every day that passes, some of what you paid disappears — even if the underlying doesn't move at all. That daily bleed is theta, and understanding it is the difference between using time and being destroyed by it.
Why time has value
An option's price has two parts: intrinsic value (how far in the money it already is) and time value (the premium for what might happen before expiration). Time value exists because more time means more chances for the underlying to move your way. As time runs out, those chances shrink — so the time-value portion decays toward zero. Theta is the daily rate of that decay.
The decay curve isn't a straight line
This is the part that surprises people. Theta doesn't bleed evenly — it accelerates. An option loses time value slowly when expiration is weeks away and then far faster in the final days and hours. Plotted out, it's a curve that steepens sharply at the end. The last day of an option's life is where time value evaporates fastest.
Far from expiry, theta is a slow leak. Near expiry, it's a burst pipe.
Why 0DTE is almost pure theta
A zero-days-to-expiration option has essentially no time left, so its time value collapses through the session. That's the double edge of 0DTE: the same rapid decay that punishes a slow, wrong trade also means a correct, fast move pays quickly before theta can eat it. Speed and timing stop being nice-to-haves and become the entire game.
Long theta vs. short theta
If you buy options, theta is your enemy — you need the move to arrive faster than time decays your premium. If you sell options, theta is your friend — you collect that decay, but you take on open-ended risk in exchange. Neither side is free; both are a trade-off between time and risk. Knowing which side of theta you're on is step one.
Managing the clock
The practical lesson: time in a trade is a cost, not a comfort. Holding a losing long option “to see if it comes back” means paying accelerating rent for a fading chance.
