Discipline & Risk
The Discipline of Sitting Out
The trades you don't take will save you more money than the ones you do. But sitting on your hands is the single hardest discipline in trading — and one of the most valuable.

Everyone focuses on entries and exits. The most underrated skill is the non-trade: the discipline to do nothing when conditions don't warrant a trade. Cash is a position, and often the correct one.
Why we overtrade
Boredom, the itch to "make something happen," the feeling that watching without trading is wasted time — these push traders to force setups that aren't there, especially in a dead, choppy tape (overtrading). The midday lull is where forced trades go to die (the dead-tape window). Activity feels productive; in trading it's usually just expensive.
No edge, no trade
A trade is only worth taking when your conditions are actually met — the setup, the risk, the read. Absent that, you have no edge, and trading without an edge is just paying the spread to gamble (what a trading edge is). The professional's default isn't "what can I trade?" It's "is there anything here worth trading?" — usually the answer is no (why most day traders lose).
The market pays you to wait for your pitch and punishes you for swinging at everything. Most of the game is standing still.
How rules enforce patience
Patience is hard precisely because it's boring, and boredom breaks discipline. A rules-based system has an advantage here: it feels no urge to trade, so when its conditions aren't met, it simply doesn't — no boredom, no itch (mechanical vs discretionary). NoVo's gates are built to sit out low-quality conditions rather than force a trade — doing nothing is a valid, common output (how NoVo decides).
