The VVIX, Explained
The VIX measures market fear. The VVIX measures how unstable that fear is — the volatility of volatility. It sees turbulence the VIX alone can miss.

The VIX measures the market's expected 30-day volatility — the "fear gauge." The VVIX goes a level deeper: it measures the expected volatility of the VIX itself. In plain terms, it tells you how jumpy and unstable fear is — the volatility of volatility.
What it adds beyond the VIX
The VIX can be low while the VVIX is elevated — meaning fear is calm now but the market expects it could spike violently. That's a different, sharper read than the VIX alone. A low VIX with a high VVIX is a warning of fragility: the surface is calm, but the potential for a sudden volatility explosion is being priced in.
The early-warning value
Because VVIX reflects demand for VIX options (bets on volatility spiking), it can rise before the VIX does — traders hedging against a jump in fear ahead of the jump itself. A climbing VVIX during a quiet, low-VIX market is one of the tells that low VIX doesn't mean low risk — the calm may be brittle.
A low VIX says the sea is calm. A high VVIX says the barometer is falling anyway.
The practical read
You won't trade the VVIX directly, but it's valuable regime context: it distinguishes a durable calm (low VIX, low VVIX) from a fragile one (low VIX, high VVIX). Combined with the VIX term structure, it sharpens your read on how stable the current volatility environment really is — and how much to trust the quiet.
