Session VWAP resets every day and anchors to the open — the day's running fair-value line. Anchored VWAP starts from a point you choose — a swing low, a prior high, an event. They're the same math from different starting points, and each is better for a different question.

When to trust session VWAP

Session VWAP is your default intraday spine — the line institutions benchmark to, the pivot for the range-day rotation, and the fastest trend gauge via its slope. For “where is fair value today, and which side is price on,” session VWAP is the answer. It's the one to lean on for the general read of the current day.

When to trust anchored VWAP

Anchored VWAP shines for specific supply/demand questions: the cost basis of the bounce-buyers (day-low anchor), the trapped top-buyers (prior-high anchor), or the post-news market (event anchor). When you want to know where a particular group of participants is positioned, anchor to the moment that matters to them.

Session VWAP answers “where's fair value today?” Anchored VWAP answers “where is this group of traders positioned?” Use the one that fits the question.

Using them together

They're complementary, not competing. Run session VWAP as your always-on read, and drop an anchored VWAP when a specific event or swing creates a group worth tracking. Confluence between them — session VWAP and an anchored VWAP at the same price — is an especially strong level. And like every line, both are context, not signals: they tell you where reactions are likely, and price confirms.
