Dark Cloud Cover & Piercing Line
These two candlestick patterns are mirror images — one warns of a top, the other of a bottom — and both hinge on the same idea: a strong candle shoving deep into the body of the one before it.

Dark cloud cover and the piercing line are two-candle reversal patterns and mirror images of each other. Both signal a potential turn when a strong second candle pushes deep into the body of the first (candlestick basics).
Dark cloud cover (bearish)
It appears at the top of an uptrend: a strong up (green) candle, then a second candle that opens higher but closes down, deep into the body of the first — ideally below its midpoint. The message: buyers pushed price up, then sellers overwhelmed them and dragged it back, hinting the up-move is exhausting (the engulfing pattern, a stronger cousin).
Piercing line (bullish)
The mirror at a downtrend bottom: a strong down (red) candle, then a candle that opens lower but closes up, deep into the first candle's body above its midpoint. Sellers had control, then buyers stepped in hard — a hint the down-move may be turning (the morning/evening star).
Both patterns say the same thing in opposite directions: whoever was in control just got shoved back hard. That shove is the tell.
Reading them well
Context is everything — these matter at the end of a trend and near a key level, not in the middle of chop (support and resistance). The deeper the second candle pushes into the first, the stronger the signal, and confirmation on the next candle beats acting on the pattern alone (reversal vs continuation). Like all candlestick patterns, treat them as a lean, not a certainty.
