Change of Character (CHoCH) is the first structural break against the prevailing trend. In an uptrend making higher highs and higher lows, a CHoCH is when price breaks the prior higher low instead of making a new high — the first time the up-structure fails. It's the earliest objective sign that the trend may be reversing.

BOS vs. CHoCH

They're a pair. A break of structure confirms the trend continues (a new high in an uptrend). A change of character warns the trend may be ending (a broken low in an uptrend). BOS keeps you in the trend; CHoCH is your cue that the trend's control is slipping and a reversal could be starting. Together they give an objective read on trend health and its potential turn.

How to use it

Treat a CHoCH as an early reversal warning, not an instant reversal trade. When you're trading with a trend and see a CHoCH, tighten up — stop adding, protect profits, be ready to switch sides. A CHoCH at a level (into a wall, at an extreme) that then confirms with a follow-through break is a higher-odds reversal — the structural version of a turn. It helps you exit a trend early and catch the reversal rather than fading the trend too soon.

A CHoCH is the trend's first crack. It doesn't mean reverse now — it means the trend just lost its grip; get ready.

The frame

CHoCH is a structural signal with some subjectivity (defining the swings), so it's confirmation and early-warning, not a standalone trigger. It's strongest with a regime flip and at a level — a CHoCH as price loses the gamma flip is a high-conviction turn. Use it to time your exit from a fading trend and your entry into the reversal, not to fade a healthy trend on the first wiggle.
